When we talk about acoustics, we usually think of music, or even the sound of our voice when we speak: in other words, the sound we hear. However, there are sounds that we don't hear, such as ultrasound, which are nevertheless incredibly interesting. In fact, in the medical field, ultrasound is an application of ultrasound that enables us to make images of the inside of the human body. For once, we can see sound rather than hear it! But how do we go about it? Well, we use ultrasound probes, which are made up of transmitters and receivers. In other words, these probes have both a voice to emit ultrasound and super ears to listen to the echoes, or reflections, of that voice. Using this equipment and the right mathematical formulae, we can perform ultrasound scans and give medical diagnoses without even having to open the human body !
